Qorvo (RFMD + TriQuint), a leading global provider of connectivity and power solutions, will demonstrate Ultra-Wideband (UWB) based indoor navigation running on a smartphone at Embedded World 2023. Indoor navigation systems provide a highly accurate network of devices to locate people or objects where GPS and other satellite technologies lack precision or fail entirely, such as inside multistory buildings, parking garages and underground locations.
The navigation demonstration leverages Qorvo's DW3720 UWB solution integrated in a smartphone, along with DW3000-based anchors and location expertise from Pinpoint GmbH, based in Chemnitz, Germany, whose technology enables the accurate, secure and reliable positioning data today's navigation systems need. The underlying implementation involves an algorithm called Downlink Time Difference of Arrival (DL-TDoA), specified by the FiRa consortium, making the smartphone's exact location available to users by precisely estimating the temporal differences of multiple UWB signals. The demonstration also includes navigation software provided by Germany-based Accuras GmbH.
Luc Darmon, senior director for Strategy and Standards at Qorvo said, "Qorvo drives innovation using our leading UWB technology and expertise in phones, infrastructure and wearables. Qorvo UWB is bringing highly accurate, private and real-time indoor positioning and navigation to airports, shopping malls and trade shows, while concurrently cutting infrastructure costs by up to 10 times. The chosen implementation enables large-scale deployments as we will demonstrate at Embedded World. We look forward to our continued collaboration with Pinpoint and other industry leaders establishing UWB as a de-facto standard for indoor navigation."
Dr. Marko Rößler, CEO of Pinpoint GmbH, said, "Pinpoint is proud to leverage Qorvo UWB solutions and very practically demonstrate that precise UWB-based indoor navigation is already here. In a world of connected IoT devices, the question of where exactly interactions happen becomes as important as its trustworthiness. Before you can unlock your rental car with your UWB smartphone, you need to know exactly where it is parked and how to get there, even in complex multistory buildings. Our GPS-like system design simplifies precise indoor positioning, enabling untracked and secure smartphone interaction."
Tobias Zobel, CEO of Accuras GmbH, said, "The growing integration of UWB modules into smartphones and their use by software solutions finally enable the indoor navigation market to grow significantly and achieve mass consumer adoption. We provide a platform for exactly this scenario, allowing our users to manage their spaces and put some smart context into their buildings."
Qorvo's UWB solutions are compliant with the IEEE 802.15.4z standard and are developed in accordance with the FiRa consortium PHY and MAC and Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) specifications. As a member of FiRa and CCC, Qorvo is committed to ensuring device interoperability and to growing the UWB ecosystem. Qorvo's UWB solutions significantly enhance the end user experience and make automotive, smartphone, consumer and industrial IoT applications simple, smart and secure.
These and other Qorvo products will be highlighted at Embedded World 2023, from March 14-16, in Nuremberg, Germany at Qorvo booth 4-578.
